FROM OUR TEAM
Dominic on free standing post boxes:
Free standing post boxes are a favourite of mine because they are such a simple and elegant answer to a very common problem.
Many customers have a gate, a rendered wall, stonework or a driveway layout where a standard wall mounted or gate mounted post box is not ideal. With a free standing post box, you do not need to cut into the gate or drill into the wall. You can position it exactly where it works best.
I also like how they can add character to the entrance of a home. The right model does not look like an afterthought - it becomes part of the property’s design.
The Gustaf is my favourite free standing post box because it has that rare combination of Scandinavian simplicity, strong build quality and real presence at the entrance of a home. It is especially well suited to higher-end properties where the post box needs to look intentional, not like an afterthought.
View product →Our free standing post boxes are a practical and elegant choice for homes where a wall mounted or gate mounted letterbox is not the right solution.
They are especially useful for properties with entrance gates, long driveways, rendered walls, stonework, boundary fences or newly landscaped entrances where you may not want to cut an opening into a gate or drill into a wall. Instead, a free standing post box can be positioned where it works best for everyday access, postal deliveries and the overall appearance of your entrance.
Many of our free standing post boxes are inspired by Scandinavian design, combining clean lines, practical capacity and long-term outdoor durability. This is important because a post box is not just a decorative item. It has to stand outside throughout the year, exposed to rain, frost, wind and changing temperatures.
At Letterbox4you, we focus on high-quality European manufacturers, including suppliers from parts of Europe where outdoor products are tested by much harsher weather than typical UK conditions. That experience can be seen in the quality of the materials, finishes, locks, hinges and overall construction of the products we supply.
Popular Free Standing Letterboxes
One of our best-selling free standing post boxes is the Jackdaw, a smart and practical option for customers looking for a reliable individual letterbox with a neat, modern appearance.
For higher-end residential properties and development projects, the Gustaf free standing post box remains one of our favourite choices. Its Scandinavian styling, strong visual presence and quality finish make it particularly well suited to premium homes, private entrances and carefully designed outdoor spaces.
Whether you are choosing a post box for a contemporary home, a gated property, a countryside entrance or a newly renovated driveway, a free standing design can provide a flexible alternative to fixing a box directly to the building or gate.
Why Choose a Free Standing Post Box?
A free standing post box may be the best option if:
- You have a gate and do not want to cut an opening for a gate mounted post box.
- You do not want to drill into brickwork, render, stone or cladding.
- Your front door or wall is not in a convenient position for postal deliveries.
- You want the post box positioned closer to the entrance of the property.
- You prefer a more prominent, architectural feature at the front of the home.
- You want a practical letterbox solution without altering the structure of your gate, fence or wall.
This type of post box is also useful where a standard letter plate in the front door is not suitable, or where the entrance layout makes it easier for post to be delivered at the boundary of the property.
Mounting Your Free Standing Post Box
Correct mounting is important for stability, appearance and everyday use.
Some models, such as the Gustaf, are designed with a pre-drilled base suitable for bolting down to a hard, level surface such as concrete or paving. This creates a clean and secure installation where the ground surface is already suitable.
Other free standing post boxes may be supplied with legs or stands that can be concreted into the ground, giving a more permanent fixing for exposed positions or softer surfaces.
Where concrete or bolt-down installation is not possible, some customers create their own weighted base as a DIY solution. This needs to be planned carefully, as we do not supply weighted bases and the final stability will depend on the design, weight and installation method used.
For best results, we usually recommend a solid concrete base or a secure hard-standing surface. This helps keep the post box stable, upright and suitable for long-term outdoor use.
Built For Everyday Outdoor Use
Our free standing post boxes are selected for homes where appearance, quality and practicality all matter. Every model is chosen with long-term outdoor use in mind, with options suitable for different property styles, capacities and installation requirements.
All our post boxes come with a standard 2-year warranty, with selected ranges offering 3-year or 5-year warranty cover. We can also help with practical advice before you order, including suitability, positioning, fixing options and whether a free standing, wall mounted, gate mounted or through-the-wall model is the best choice for your property.
If you are unsure which post box is right for your entrance, our team will be happy to help you choose the most suitable option.
